The Activity Area and Scientific Interests

A branch-wise science on safety of mining in collieries of Eastern Donbass is represented by the state unitary enterprise - The Schakhty's Research Center of Eastern Research Institute on Safety of Mining (VostNII), created in January 1997 on the basis of subdivision of MacNII.

This center has scientific personnel and laboratory basis capable to solve practical tasks regarding the scientific and technical support for ensuring safety during such activities as cooling of mines, the dust and gas mode, degassing of layers. It also helps in prognosis and prevention of sudden outbursts of coal and gas, and in the struggle against the dust, as a professional hazards.

Practical scientific and technical developments (evaluation of foulness of layers, detection of zones with risk of sudden outbursts, assessment of dust forming ability of layers, etc.) and issued on their basis recommendations are ensuring the improvement of safety of mining. They are executed effectively and at a high scientific level.

The Schakhty's Center of VostNII carry out researches on problems of safety, which are important for the whole branch of mining industry. In the basis of researches there is a  concept of fundamental tendency to simplification of chemical and atomic-molecular structure of organic-mineral mass of coals during the metamorphism. The metamorphic transformations form the hazardous and harmful properties of coals, which can lead to outbursts, pneumoconiosis, spontaneous ignition, foulness, explosion of dust, etc. They are regarded as a result of mechanochemical reactions, which are most active under the influence of mechanical forces of tectonic and technogenic nature in the shift mode under pressure upon the coal layers.

On the basis of the mentioned above concept it is possible to identify the nature of industrial hazards and ill effects, and create effective means of their prognosis using, for example, EPR- and IR- spectroscopy as a base.
